"The
Alexander Technique is about change.
It enables us to recognise and free ourselves from unconscious
layers of muscular and mental habits thereby opening us up
to
possibilities we had never even imagined"
Jill Freeman (Alexander Teacher)
The
Alexander Technique (named after its founder, F.M. Alexander) has become
well known as a practical method for improving the way we 'use' ourselves
in our everyday activities. Simple activities like sitting, standing
and walking can be done with greater ease.
Musicians, actors and athletes have learnt the technique in order to
improve the way they operate in their work. Many people have received
great and lasting relief from back, neck or shoulder pain, mental and
emotional stress and many other health problems as a result of taking
a course of lessons. Its effectiveness is well documented and has been
the subject of several scientific studies.
But the AT does not set out to treat specific problems. It offers a
way of letting go of old habitual tensions, which can then be replaced
by a different, more easeful way of being. For this reason there are
many people who work with the Alexander Technique for their own personal
development, as an ongoing practice. The philosophy behind the technique
has parallels with many spiritual philosophies and its potential is
enormous.
If you are interested in learning the Alexander Technique you should
consult a teacher in your area about starting a course of lessons. During
a lesson the Alexander teacher will work gently with her hands to bring
about muscular releases and greater co-ordination in your body.
Another way to find out about the technique is to attend an introductory
group course. This way you will get an overall picture of the principles
and a lot of experiential work, with some individual 'hands on' work.
